Welcome to Beyond the Bell!
Welcome to Beyond the Bell! I’m J. Andrew Waugh, I am an educator, college counselor, and passionate advocate for helping students unlock their full potential. This blog is inspired by my own journey, which began in boarding school as a young student navigating both academic and personal challenges.
Like many, I struggled to find my footing in a traditional school setting. My experiences with ADHD and a slower processing speed often left me feeling like I didn’t quite belong. Traditional education didn’t always accommodate my learning style, which made me question my abilities and future. However, everything changed when I stepped into the world of boarding school. It was here that I found mentors who recognized my potential, encouraged me to lean into my strengths, and demonstrated that success can look different for everyone.
The Power of Community and Mentorship
In boarding school, I discovered the true power of community and mentorship. My mentors encouraged me to step into leadership roles and challenged me to grow both academically and personally. These experiences revealed to me that leadership is not about being perfect but about showing up with compassion, integrity, and resilience. I learned that students thrive best when they feel seen, valued, and supported. It’s a lesson I carry into my work every day as I strive to be that same source of encouragement and guidance for the students I work with.
Today, I serve as a boarding school educator overseeing leadership and student activities. My goal is to create a space for students to stretch beyond their comfort zones, where they can develop the confidence to tackle real-world challenges. I focus on building an environment where young people feel safe to explore their potential, make mistakes, and ultimately grow into their unique leadership styles.
Navigating the College Counseling Journey
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is college counseling. Every Sunday night, I sit down with juniors and seniors in the dorm, helping them navigate the college admissions process. For many students, this journey is about more than just college; it’s about envisioning their future and understanding their place in the world. I help them articulate their stories and apply to schools that align with their goals and values. My role is not just about guiding them through applications; it’s about preparing them for a new chapter in their lives.
Working closely with these students allows me to learn about their dreams, their worries, and the unique perspectives they bring—especially those from international backgrounds who face additional challenges in adapting to a new educational system. It’s rewarding to watch them grow and gain the confidence they need to step into their futures.
Continuing My Journey of Learning
To enhance my ability to support students, I have earned a certificate in college counseling through SCOIR. However, I’m driven to expand my expertise even further. I believe that continual learning is more than just professional growth; it’s a way to pay forward the mentorship I received. I want to ensure that each student I work with feels prepared for the next step in their journey.
As I contemplate my next steps, I’m considering pursuing a second master’s degree in either Independent School Leadership or Therapeutic Recreation. I believe that these fields align well with my passion for education and my desire to create supportive, nurturing environments for students.
